Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
From witnessing someone close to me struggle with opioid addiction and working as a pharmacy technician with diverse clients in my community, I have learned that the world of pharmacy is more than distributing medications.
I dream of becoming a pharmacist not only to provide treatment—but to provide support and empathy to every patient I encounter.
I love that the University of Rhode Island’s six-year Doctorate in Pharmacy program embraces experience that is both hands-on and rooted in ethics. I hope to integrate knowledge with compassion through collaborating at URI’s CVS Caremark Interdisciplinary Health Delivery Laboratory and exploring immersive learning through Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE). I look forward to Service Learning: A Health Care Experience during my first professional year; I hope to work with an NPO to provide care to diverse communities.
To me, the most important aspects of pharmacy lie in ethics—treating each patient as an individual, rather than as a statistic. Through URI’s unique Professional Elective course Exploring Interdisciplinary Healthcare Solutions for Opioid Use Disorder, I hope to investigate this pressing problem—an issue that is close to me. We need to prevent crises like these and provide continued care to those struggling with addictions, and a URI education embraces those values.
I know that URI would allow me to cultivate knowledge to become an excellent pharmacist. But, above all, URI would help me to embrace ethics and empathy—the values that make us able to truly help others when they need it most.
