Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
I realized during the pandemic that there was a need to provide free, individualized educational support. Not only did diverse learners find themselves struggling when thrust into remote learning, but there was also a lack of accessible STEM and arts educational support across communities. I aimed to channel my passion for programming into opportunities that could streamline the way we design and create—and learn.
With a few friends with a passion for education and innovation, I launched [Redacted] Tutors in June [Year].
A foremost priority was to promote accessibility to more communities by converting our company to a nonprofit. We secured our 501(c)(3) status after the first month of operation, which enabled us to make all classes free while improving our state-of-the-art learning tools. We continue to use virtual textbooks, drawing tablets, and communication platforms—which all provide full-fledged coursework at no cost to students.
As Co-Founder and President of [Redacted], I handled multiple operations when launching the company. I drafted the company’s bylaws with our core values of accessibility in mind. I designed and continue to maintain our company’s website and manage our scheduling software to organize our student base of over 500 and our tutoring team. I am currently in the process of developing our own software. I attend meetings to collaborate with other like-minded startups and manage Google Advertisements—all to ensure that we are helping as many students as possible.
It has been incredibly meaningful to see many of the students we tutored feel mastery and confidence, and we have been able to create volunteer opportunities for over 40 passionate tutors. Our efforts were acknowledged by students’ parents, by school principals in the township—and especially by our students as they felt supported.
[Redacted] has allowed me to unite my drive to create innovation, my passion for teaching, and my desire to bring empathy to every endeavor. While I have only begun my work to improve educational equity in my small town—in a country in dire need of collective efforts toward change—I hope that I can continue promoting access through contributing to future innovation.
