Featured Supplemental Essay Prompt For Tufts University Applicants:
It’s cool to love learning. What excites your intellectual curiosity? 250 Word Maximum.
Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
My love for getting lost in fantastical literary worlds began when my aunt snuck me Harry Potter books during childhood summers. My parents wouldn’t necessarily have disapproved—they’d instead shared their favorites, immersing me in the connectedness and selflessness of Ramayana and Panchatantra.
While those stories taught me to value benevolence and altruism, I continued exploring. Percy Jackson told me of epic bravery, but also the blurred lines between good and evil—set with the backdrop of tense, yet cheesy, budding teenage love stories.
More recently, I’ve begun unearthing different themes while exploring a new literary genre: manga. After picking up my first volume during ninth grade at a local comic book store, I immersed myself in the world of Attack on Titan—discovering themes that became increasingly relevant in recent years.
The manga grappled with sociological phenomena that my past fantasy worlds hadn’t addressed so bluntly: humanity’s innate desire for freedom, coercion, class power struggles, even the natural cycle of hatred. Additionally, the manga’s historical and philosophical insights were deeply intriguing: from the fascism of World War II to gray areas in morality. While contemplating these themes, I marveled at unique literary components—from strategic panel depictions to central anti-villains and antiheroes.
With every new message and meaning, I satisfy my intellectual hunger. Branching out in literature illuminates how reading diverse voices can help unpack biased representations, Western-centric perspectives, and more. The sociological commentary laced into literature creates connections between my observations of the world, the authors’ intent, and everything in between.
