— St. John’s University Prompt 1 —
St. John’s would like to learn more about you than grades and test scores alone can reveal. The following essay topic, with a word minimum instead of word maximum, is designed to give you an opportunity to write fully and freely to the Admissions Committee. As the essay conveys your voice and your ideas, the Admissions Committee considers it one of the most important elements of your application. If you find yourself struggling to respond to the prompt, you can view examples of strong essays.
Discuss a book that you would call a “great book.” We want to learn both about the ideas in the book and about you. What makes the book great in your view? What effect has it had on what you think or how you think? (400 words)

Featured Supplemental Essay Prompt For St. John’s University Applicants:
Doctor of Pharmacy Applicants: Please submit a brief 250-word essay discussing your reasons for choosing a career in pharmacy and why you are applying to St. John's University. 250 Word Maximum.
Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
From witnessing someone close to me struggle with opioid addiction and working as a pharmacy technician with diverse clients in my community, I have learned that the world of pharmacy is more than distributing medications.
I dream of becoming a pharmacist not only to provide treatment—but to provide true support and empathy to every patient I encounter.
I love that St. John’s six-year Doctorate of Pharmacy program is both innovative and rooted in ethics, embracing the university’s Vincentian values. I look forward to immersive experiences working with local patients in Advanced Community Pharmacy. I would love to work with the CPHS Urban Institute, from promoting public health missions within diverse communities to mentoring local high school students with CFPP. I hope to continue integrating knowledge with compassion in Community Health Advocacy and Outreach and Vincentian Health Care: Caring for the Underserved.
I also want to work toward promoting ethical care throughout NYC and beyond. Through Case Studies in Drugs and Diseases, I can investigate issues like drug dependence, affordable care, and more. In Leadership Development in Pharmacy Practice, I hope to build skills that can allow me to work toward future change—especially in addressing the opioid crisis.
I know that St. John’s would allow me to cultivate knowledge to become an excellent pharmacist. But, above all, St. John’s would help me to embrace ethics and empathy—the values that make us able to truly help others when they need it most.
