Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
Recently, my STEM curiosities have taken on deeper meaning. While volunteering with nursing home patients, I saw that their health and memory difficulties interfered not only with daily tasks—but also their emotional well-being. During my research internship, I also began investigating links between computing and medical data visualization—important tools for public health, prevention, and solutions.
Integrating my curiosities with my desire to help patients, I dream of pursuing Biomedical Engineering at RPI. While exploring captivating projects and talking with RPI friends, I’m drawn to the community’s unmatchable emphasis on mission-based learning. With inquiry-based courses like Programming for BME and Modeling of Biomedical Systems, I would investigate applications of computing tools in biomedical advancement. Hoping to innovate toward Alzheimer’s prevention and degenerative disease treatment, I can’t wait to explore real-world cases in Biomaterials Science and Engineering. Through The Arch or REU, it would be a dream to research with a mentor like Dr. [Professor], who has inspiring work modeling degenerative disease.
Thinking of my friends at the nursing home—with diverse backgrounds and needs—I hope to investigate collaborative solutions. To ultimately help patients regain independence, I look forward to team-based learning and creating in Biomedical Engineering Design. We’d work across disciplines to address healthcare and nutrition inequities through HASS Integrative Pathways like Ethics, Integrity, and Social Responsibility. I’d also help local communities with Circle K and more—promoting healthcare access, food justice, and empowerment.
At RPI, I would join a mission-driven community—and channel curiosities toward equity, access, and quality of life for all.
