Successful Supplemental Essay Example From Our Accepted Alumni Student:
Working at Code Ninjas taught me to spark CS curiosity through fostering student connections. Leading my nonprofit [Name] Tutors showed me that educational access isn’t promised to all. And developing [app name], a web-based audio/video transcriber, revealed that CS-based innovations are driven not just by technical knowledge—they are driven by empathy.
As a prospective Georgia Tech College of Computing student, I hope to collaboratively learn and launch wide-reaching innovation—with the main goal of increasing accessibility in ease-of-use and in bridging boundaries.
I hope to specialize my learning through the CS program’s Intelligence thread to ultimately create applications that combine concepts of ML and NLP. Through courses including Natural Language & Processing (CS 4650) and Machine Learning (CS 4641), I hope to help develop frameworks that convert verbal commands into programmable instructions—a platform for all coders, and accessible to visually-impaired engineers.
GTech’s CS courses would also allow me to work toward creating accessible educational technologies. While developing [app name], I realized there is plenty of untapped audio/video information in library archives. Transcribing and translating the material would allow students from all backgrounds to access high-level academic material. Managing large volumes of transcriptions requires knowledge in Big Data—GTech’s Data & Information thread, including Introduction to Database Systems (CS 4400), would provide me with a strong data management skill set.
Along with exploring these intellectual paths, I hope to contribute to—and learn from—the Atlanta community by creating an investigationthat integrates CS disciplines with sociological perspectives. I hope to researchwhether AI-innovated lesson transcriptions can positively impact learning outcomes in communities where particular courses are not offered. I appreciate GTech initiatives including Jumpstart and Innovating for Social Impact Program—we would develop a collaborative project that works toward remedying systemic inequalities. Finally I hope to determine ways that NLP and Big Data can positively influence public education and close achievement gaps, as we continue in a world where computing and education are inextricably intertwined.
